During my teenage years I never give a second thought to what was in he garden or the wonders of nature in a park, absolutely not. My entire focus was making sure my mini skirt looked the biz, along with the eyeliner as I strutted around in my beige plastic fashion boots that would freeze my feet in winter because they were really nothing more than glorified wellies! When the years evolved and I got married and eventually along came children I never found the time to appreciate the garden, other than keeping it nice and tidy and…

The overly warm weather that hit the UK last week with temperatures rising in some areas to over 30c I thought I would melt away before it cooled down. I reside in the Southeast where it was very hot. I literally had my fans on from early morning to middle of the night. Here in the UK it is all or nothing. There is no longer the build up like there used to be when I was growing up in the 50’s. It is either cold or in a heartbeat hot, there is no in-between anymore. My Dig…

By the time we reach our seventies, most of us have become quite good at decluttering our lives in more ways than one. As we age we take stock of different things in life, and usually start the process of decluttering stuff we have accumulated over the years. Lots of knick knacks more than likely stored away somewhere in a box, with our intentions of keeping it all just in case we need it again… which we probably never will! I gave loads of stuff that was of value and in great condition to the charity shops after asking my…

I often wondered why I was the one in the family to develop coeliac disease, which I’d never heard of before diagnosis. Then it came to light one of my uncles was coeliac, and this can apparently run in families, one of my son’s was diagnosed a few years ago. Being coeliac simply means that the body attacks itself, when gluten is consumed through food or some drinks that contain wheat, rye or barley. Gluten is a protein. There are two main proteins in wheat gluten: Gliadin which triggers the immune reaction when gluten enters the body. Glutenin gives dough…

When we have matured like fine wine, our energy levels slightly diminish (I have no idea where they go), and we are less able to do the active things we did in younger days, for long periods of time. I’ve noticed that after an hour of washing floors I need a five minute break, whereas ten years ago I could carry on for at least another hour. When I am expecting George, my 7 year old very active grandson, I have to prepare myself for the event. George is the baby of the grandkids. All the rest are grown up,…

It can be a strange feeling when suddenly, or expected in some cases we end up living alone after losing our spouse or partner. This can be at any age young or old. When this happens in the mature years, it can be more difficult to stay social other than with family and if lucky some very close friends, because not everyone has friendships that last, and not everyone has family. Losing a partner is one of life’s most difficult and upsetting experiences. The sudden silence can be deafening and realising that you are the only one in the home…

In my younger days I used to look upon getting older as something taboo, no, I did not want to go down that route. I was convinced it would take years for me to get to the end of that route where my locks would have turned grey, white or whatever, and I would be plodding around in flat granny shoes (as I termed them). Then suddenly I was no longer twenty, I was thirty and so on until I finally admitted at sixty five my youth was well and truly behind me. It was a bit…

I think I have mentioned in a previous post that shoes are my ‘thing.’ I have always loved shoes even from a young child. My mother told me that she used to whisper to the shop assistant not to produce any red shoes when I was being fitted for school footwear, because I would have a hissy fit if I could not leave the shop without red shoes on my feet or in a box which I would carry myself with love! In my teens I loved Mary Quant shoes and was the proud owner of a pair. In…

It is strange how all those things we felt were so important to us in younger days, simply drift away into the abyss when we get older, and are never given another thought. I’d never dream of walking out the door without my makeup intact, good grief going naked outside, never! Now I walk out without any makeup at all and don’t even bother to glance in the hallway mirror as I step out into the big wide world. Clothes are something I have always put priority on ‘liking’ regardless of label. I loved the mini skirts and flared trousers. …

I am one of those believers who is convinced that when the body and mind work alongside each other it makes life easier and provides the brain with a challenge. When retired the days can sometimes just drag along, and boredom can set in. If you like reading, knitting, sewing, painting, gardening, doing some carpentry etc, these can help to pass away the hours when not out about or visiting someone. I am not a television person, never have been, so I have to keep myself busy with some kind of activity. When something interesting catches my attention, my thoughts…
