Benefits of Being Older

Little Cups of Gold

In my younger days I used to look upon getting older as something taboo, no, I did not want to go down that route.   I was convinced it would take years for me to get to the end of that route where my locks would have turned grey, white or whatever, and I would be plodding around in flat granny shoes (as I termed them).

Then suddenly I was no longer twenty, I was thirty and so on until I finally admitted at sixty five my youth was well and truly behind me.   It was a bit of a shock when admitting the years of maturing like fine wine were actually here.  Then, I thought how lucky I was to have lived to this age and I feel even more blessed ten years down the line coming up 75 years, and all the benefits that come with it!

I have been enjoying myself with simple things that keep my brain working and my body in decent shape, and laughing at amusing things and even myself when I walk into the kitchen and have forgotten what I went in for, or writing myself notes with smiley faces at the end to remember something.

Some of the Benefits of Being Older and No Longer Matter So Much

  • Do people like me? I’m not too bothered, because everyone cannot take a liking to everyone.
  • Have I dressed okay, will my outfit suit?  If not,  I don’t care!
  • Have I said the right things? Well if I didn’t it is not the end of the world, and I did not deliberately say anything to offend anyone!
  • I get to travel on the buses for free!
  • I can have a free eye test every two years.
  • I can get other benefits I could not in my youth, well I worked and paid my taxes.

We Become an Expert in What Really Matters

  • We all know that the love and friendship of family and friends is better than having material things.
  • Having good physical and mental health are worth far more than any amount of money sitting in a bank account.

We Become Story Tellers

Our life story can be interesting to the younger generations, because all depending on what year of birth we can return back to worldwide events that happened that we lived in and tell the kids about them.  My grandkids have asked what I used to do at their ages for fun,  and when I tell them they find it hard to believe there were no mobiles, tablets or computers.  They were even more surprised when I tell them I learned to type on a manual typewriter… I had to show them a picture of one because they had no idea what I was talking about!

Things We Appreciate More

  • Waking up to sunshine streaming through the windows.
  • A  cup of tea or coffee, with a good book or magazine.
  • Chatting to a friend on the phone.
  • Walking in a park with nature all around.
  • Having a snooze in the middle of the day when you feel tired out of the blue.

These moments are the little cups of pure gold that we take more notice of in our matured like fine wine years!  Yes, life is good, make the most of it!
